Manhattan continues to watch as future timelines continue to reshape the metaverse and birth yet more new worlds. This act of selflessness profoundly affects Manhattan, in the same way Laurie Blake once reminded him of the magic of thermodynamic miracles. In this moment, Superman cares only about saving lives and preventing the destruction of his world. Instead, he merely intercepts another attacking villain, sparing Manhattan's life in the process. For a brief moment, it appears as though Superman has finally been pushed over the edge and intends to kill Manhattan. That fateful moment finally comes as Superman learns it was Doctor Manhattan who caused the car accident that killed his parents as a teenager. Manhattan knows either Superman will kill him, or the metaverse is about to be destroyed. His vision of the future ends with an image of an enraged Superman charging directly at him, followed by infinite blackness. Superman is desperate to prevent an all-out world war fueled by fear and paranoia, but Manhattan refuses to do anything more than observe. Superman and Manhattan finally meet in issue #12, even as the Man of Steel fights a lopsided battle against dozens of powerful villains.
